My name is Mitch (Mitchell) Dickey and I am running for the Madison County School Board. I have been a resident of Madison County since 2005. I was born in Green Bay, Wisconsin and moved to Virginia in 1993. I am a 1999 graduate of Sherando High School and a 2003 graduate of Bridgewater College. I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Management Information Systems and hold, or have held, several industry certifications in the Network Engineering field. I have been employed by Loudoun County Public Schools since 2014 as a Lead Communications Engineer (Senior Network Engineer). I worked for Frederick County (Winchester) Public Schools from 2003 to 2011. For three years (2011-2014) I worked in the private sector serving businesses and other K12s in the area. Since graduating from college I have worked directly in K12 or as a consultant serving K12s for 22 years. I am a published author, technical writer, and subject matter expert. I have volunteered for the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources issuing deer damage inspections and permits as well as working with Madison County Public Schools on their Career and Technical Education and Technology Advisory committees. I have coached Madison County Parks and Rec youth sports and was a member of the Madison County Parks and Rec Baseball Board.
My wife, Beth, is a Kindergarten teacher at Madison Primary School where she has taught since 2002. I have two children, William, who just graduated and will be attending Shenandoah University, and Ella, who is a rising Freshman at Madison County High School. I enjoy watching my kids play sports, hunting and fishing, amateur radio (W4LAN), cycling, and spending time with my family.
I have been interested in serving the Madison County community on the school board for some time. I know several teachers and speak with them often about successes and concerns with the division. I believe Madison County Public Schools is successful due to it’s people and I would like to help them become even more successful. I see Madison County Public Schools as a leader in many areas and believe we should focus on the things that Madison County is great at, while also growing in areas that we are traditionally not known for. Madison County is a very diverse, rural, county, and I believe that is what makes Madison County great!
I believe I would bring a substantial amount of K12 technology knowledge to the school board. We cannot be reactive to technology growth in Madison. A good example of this is the recent pandemic where 85% of the Madison constituency was without high speed internet. This was not the fault of Madison County Public Schools. I am using this as an example of infrastructure that could have been in place long before the pandemic and we are now seeing rural broadband being implemented at a high rate. I believe I have the skills to assist Madison County Public Schools be prepared for our children’s future technological needs. I am a troubleshooter by trade and I believe that troubleshooting is not just technology related. I believe I could bring years of troubleshooting skills to Madison County Public Schools to help with decisions, ideas, questions, and problems. I would also love to be a part of growing Madison County Public Schools into an even bigger success.
I look forward to serving on the school board and working shoulder to shoulder with staff and students!
